Special Olympics Ontario/London is dedicated to enriching the lives of Londoners with an intellectual disability through sport. We support 18 different sports with over 400 athletes. Volunteer Opportunity: Assistant Coaches for Rhythmic Gymnastics Time Commitment: 2 hours/week Tuesday -6:15-8:00 currently to May 20/25 Location: St. Georges Elementary, 782 Waterloo Street The role: In rhythmic gymnastics, athletes learn a series of set dance routines while using different apparatus. As with other Special Olympics sports, rhythmic gymnastics allows athletes to learn and compete at a level appropriate to their skills. There are 4 levels, with level 1 being for novice athletes on up to level 4 for the most skilled. In London we currently have athletes at levels 1 through 3. The apparatus/equipment used in the routines is 1) Clubs 2) Hoop 3) Ribbon 4) Rope 5) Ball .Each level learns 4 routines. Typically, the routines are under 1 minute in length. At a typical practice, athletes and coaches gather for the warm up, team dance and team cheer. (The team dance and team cheer are unique to London. This is something the young woman who started the program twelve or so years ago started and it has continued.) The athletes then divide into groups based on their level and the coaches work with them for the duration of the practice.
