LDA-London Region is currently recruiting University and/or College students to volunteer their time this winter by joining our TEAM of tutor/mentors. • Are you interested in learning more about learning disabilities and ADHD? • Are you interested in being a tutor/mentor to a child or youth? • Do you have previous tutoring experience? • Do you believe you are a fun and outgoing individual? • Are you patient and have a warm personality?The Learning Disabilities Association – London Region helps children/youth, grades 3 to 12, living with Learning Disabilities (LDs) to realize their potential and stay on the path to success. You can contribute by helping them access tools and supports that they require in order to be on the right path, with the right tools, and to have a bright future.Academic Tutors (both in-person and online tutors needed) This 9-week ONLINE program provides individualized academic tutoring sessions for student’s grades 3 to 12. Tutors will be responsible for leading these sessions by assisting with homework or providing extra instruction and practice with academic subjects. The Program & Volunteer Coordinator will be available for assistance and all tutors will have access to many resources to assist with building their weekly sessions. Tutors for Virtual Walk-in Help for High School students (online) Tutors will assist High School students who drop-in virtually for homework help, test and exam preparation that brings many challenges and frustrations and also assistance with strategies for learning and mentorship. Executive Functioning Tutors (online tutors needed) For grades 4 to 12 students This is a 9-week online program. Tutors will provide small group (same grade level) instruction for 90 minutes once weekly. Weekly topics would include areas such as time management skills, organization, memory strategies, study techniques/strategies, note-taking, etc. The Program & Volunteer Coordinator will be available for assistance and all tutors will have access to many resources to assist with building their weekly sessions. Essay Writing Workshop Tutors (online tutors needed) For grades 7 to 12 students This 8-week individualized ONLINE mentoring program will assist students to learn or build upon their skills/strategies to the essay writing process. Tutors will go over the various types of essays, how to understand a rubric, teach steps to the writing process, how to use graphic organizers to lay out brainstorming thoughts, ideas, research and supporting information, how to research effectively, note taking and citing resources correctly. Tutors will teach students how to take this information and transform them into coherent sentences that flow from one paragraph to the next. Each week will be systematic mentoring working towards completing a 5-paragraph persuasive essay project on a topic of the student’s choice. The Program & Volunteer Coordinator will be available for assistance and all tutors will have access to many resources to assist with building their weekly sessions. Required Qualifications/Training: Training is mandatory and provided to all tutor/mentor team members at LDA-LR A Vulnerable Sectors Check is required by all tutor/mentors in these positions Skills Preferred: Previous tutoring experience Experience working with children and youth Some knowledge of learning disabilities and ADHD Excellent written and verbal communication skills
